Growing Together at apg: Our Community Garden

At apg, we believe a great workplace grows from the ground up — and sometimes, that starts with a seed. Just outside our Minneapolis headquarters, employees are getting their hands dirty in the best way possible: tending to our thriving community garden.

The garden began back in 2012 when a few employees saw potential in an unused patch of land next to our building. What started as a small project with a couple of raised beds has turned into a beloved seasonal tradition and one of the most unique things about apg.

Each spring, employees come together to prepare the soil, plant seeds, and nurture everything from corn, tomatoes, radishes and cucumbers to peppers, herbs, and flowers. It’s open to everyone — whether you’re a lifelong gardener or just curious to try something new. The space offers a welcome break from the screen, a little sunshine, and a chance to reconnect with coworkers in a casual, low-pressure setting.

What’s New This Season

This year, the apg garden has grown — literally. We’re excited to share that we have once again received grant funding through the Minnesota Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), which is helping us expand and enhance the space. With this funding, we’ve added:

  • Ten new raised garden beds
  • Fresh soil and garden hand tools
  • Outdoor benches for relaxing or socializing
  • Seeds for the season
  • Upgraded fencing, including underground barriers to help keep out curious woodchucks

These improvements make the garden more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The extra beds open up room for more participation, while the fencing and benches improve both durability and comfort. It’s all part of creating a space that supports wellness, relaxation, and community.

With the cost of fresh produce on the rise and limited space at home for many, the garden is also a practical benefit. Employees are welcome to harvest and enjoy what they grow — or share with others in the apg community. There’s something special about bringing home a handful of cherry tomatoes you grew yourself, or swapping recipes based on what’s sprouting that week.

What started as a simple idea over a decade ago has grown into something we’re proud of. Our community garden is a place to slow down, connect, and enjoy something meaningful — together.
