The Challenge: Old Systems holding back modern Retail

Footasylum, a leading UK sports and streetwear retailer with over 60 stores nationwide, had long relied on an in-house POS system that was:

  • Built on outdated technology (Java-based)
  • Clunky and limited in mobility (staff tied to tills or iPods)
  • Unable to handle modern omnichannel processes such as mixed baskets, ship-to-home, or endless aisle efficiently

After a strategic review led by new ownership, Footasylum chose to move fast and overhaul its retail systems. The decision: adopt Newstore’s mobile-first POS platform integrated with apg®’s NetPro cash drawers.

  • Newstore brought a mobile-native, omnichannel platform that works out of the box, enabling features like endless aisle, click & collect, and unified shopper data.
  • apg® NetPro, an IP-based networked cash drawer, gave staff the ability to process cash transactions anywhere in-store, untethered from fixed checkout counters.

Together, they enabled a future-ready, mobile-first retail environment.

The Benefits

Footasylum mobile-first checkout using apg NetPro

Customer

Frictionless Checkout

Associates can complete transactions directly on the sales floor.

Mixed Payment Flexibility

Customers can pay with any combination: cash, card, gift cards, loyalty points, Klarna, or Clearpay, something the old system couldn’t support.

Faster Service

No more queuing at traditional tills; receipts can be printed instantly on the floor.

For Store Associates

Freedom & Mobility

Staff are no longer tied to a counter; they can sell, upsell, and complete transactions anywhere.

Ease of Use

Store teams described Newstore + NetPro as “catnip”, the more features they got, the more they wanted.

Empowerment

Associates can serve customers more naturally, without breaking engagement to head back to a fixed till.

For Operations

Optimized Store Layouts

Smaller or fewer cash desks free up valuable floor space for merchandising.

Scalability

With 260 NetPro drawers deployed, Footasylum can easily add or move drawers wherever needed (just a network point and power required).

Security & Compliance

Every drawer event (open/close) is logged, feeding into Newstore and Footasylum’s data lake, creating accountability and reducing fraud risk.

Speed of Deployment

Footasylum went live across its full estate in just a few months, with its Oxford Street flagship opening on day one of the rollout.

For the Business

Sales Growth

Conversions, profits, and total sales are all up since the rollout.

Customer Engagement

With features like “Bring It To Me” (QR-code triggered fitting room service) and YouTube-led brand experiences, Footasylum is building deeper ties with Gen Z customers.

Future-Ready Data

Integration with Adyen and Newstore gives a complete view of customer journeys across channels, helping manage fraud and personalize experiences.

The Impact

Footasylum’s transformation is a textbook example of how hardware and software innovation go hand in hand:

Newstore delivered the mobile-first omnichannel platform that powers the customer journey.

  1. Newstore delivered the mobile-first omnichannel platform that powers the customer journey.
  2. apg® NetPro ensured that cash – still a third of Footasylum’s business – fits seamlessly into this modern retail model.

The result: a retail experience that’s faster, more flexible, and truly customer-centric.
